Most of the creeks around this area would be worthy of checking out with a gold pan too. The Entiat River flows from the high country of the Cascade Mountains and some gold can be found all throughout the river.

Check the smaller creeks that feed into it too. There is gold all around this area. Fine gold can be found throughout the Stehekin River. A few scattered copper and gold mines can be found all throughout this drainage from its headwaters to where it enters Lake Chelan. Fine gold can be found all throughout the Okanogan River from the British Columbia border down to its confluence with the Columbia River.

The gold is very fine here so careful gold panning is needed to recover the gold. The Similkameen River that flows into the Okanogan River has also produced a decent amount of gold, including some sizable nuggets over the years. Using a metal detector might be a good way to find some of these gold nuggets. The Sanpoil River contains gold from its confluence with the Columbia River up to its headwaters, with most of the mining activity in this area occurs around the town of Republic. The waters around Republic are especially rich, and the hard rock mines here are the richest in the state.

Where the Kettle River enters Washington, gold is found all around the town of Danville. Several lode prospects are scattered around the town as well. And some applied muscle work. For years, the economy of Republic was largely fueled by gold mining. Ferry County residents say a large number of ex-Buckhorn workers moved to Alaska, Nevada, Montana and other places where gold mining continues. Like broad swaths of rural Washington, Ferry County was once sustained by mining, timber and agriculture, which in Ferry County meant cattle ranching. Now all three industries have more or less disappeared. Severe restrictions limiting logging on federal land created since the early s pushed forestry jobs out of Ferry County, where half of the forests are federal.

State records show six sawmills in Ferry County in ; there is one today. As forestry and mining jobs vanished, so did the homes with their small ranches, said Curlew rancher Bowe Brown.

Only a handful of ranches remain. Unemployment is unchecked in Ferry County. The unemployment rate in August was 9. Yet local leaders are pessimistic about the discovery of new gold providing fast relief. Permitting a mine takes years, in part because potential gold veins are under lands controlled by various agencies with separate permitting schemes.

Buckhorn was the last project permitted, a process that took the owners 20 years, Myers said. A company considering investing millions of dollars into mining a gold vein may be scared away by the prospect of waiting years for all the permits, Kretz said. Washington State can be good for gold panning. However there are better states out there.

So if panning will be the sole purpose of your trip, then there are several nearby states more deserving of your attention such as Oregon or Idaho.
